      Photonic Design

      Mentor provides an automation solution for the photonic expert reducing layout time from weeks to hours. We also offer a drag and drop methodology to support the IC designers who now is moving to integrated photonics design.



      Mentor provides solutions for both the photonic expert and the IC designer. Mentor’s integrated photonic design platform provides a complete flow from capture, simulation, implementation, and to physical verification.

      LightSuite Photonic Compiler is a script driven environment with advanced co-electrical and optical routing that reduces the layout time through automation from weeks to hours. L-Edit Photonics enables implementation in a traditional IC layout editor.

      Photonic simulation is supported through integration with our multiple OpenDoor partners. Photonic and transistor co-simulation is also supported by some of the partners. Foundry supported process design kits are available.

      Layout Automation
      LightSuite Photonic Compiler is the only layout automation tool for integrated photonics. It is a toolbox of automation engines for both the photonics and electrical parts of the design. LightSuite Photonic Compiler is fast; it can route 500 optical components in an hour. The user can select from multiple routing engines, along with routing directives like fixed length that can be applied to a waveguide or multiple waveguides. The resulting design is DRC clean, because Calibre RealTime is called during all placement and routing steps.

      LightSuite Photonic Compiler supports multiple use models:

      • Script driven - For the Photonics expert, enables complete control over the PIC design implementation
      • Schematic driven layout - For the custom IC designer
      • Design of experiments - enable the automatic layout for creating a test chip, where parameters of a cell can be swept to create multiple instances
      • Interposer - the photonic design is the interposer, and one or more photonic or electrical die can be placed on the photonic interposer.

      L-Edit Photonics extends the full-featured layout editor L-Edit to support manual layout of integrated photonic designs without having to write a single line of code. L-Edit Photonics enables the fast creation of a photonic design using a drag and drop methodology in an IC layout editor. Designers can place optical components from a foundry-provided PDK and then connect them with curved waveguides. Designer can insert crossings where necessary. L-Edit Photonics precision-snaps waveguides to optical pins to ensure a perfect waveguide to device connection. Electrical components can also be placed and interconnected. Once the design is completed, a simulation netlist can be extracted.

      Key Features

      • L-Edit Photonics supports a layout-centric design flow where a schematic is not necessary. The benefit of this approach is that the layout is the “golden" design database

      Calibre is the Gold Standard for photonic layout verification. It has the ability to verify the curved structures using its equation based design rules reducing the number of false violations.

      Mentor works closely with our multiple photonic simulation OpenDoor partners in order to provide a complete design flow. These partners include: Luceda; Lumerical, an Ansys Company; Optiwave and VPIphotonics. These flows also support photonic and transistor level co-simulation.
